"BIg" is in the eye of the beholder Uzi, and I'm afraid it looks like you are just expressing your insecurities - quality journalism is quality journalism, no matter the outlet.

Regards former military service, well, I was a peace time Choc infanteer who suffered the slings and arrows of headquarters wallahs who said I "wasn't a real soldier".

I also didn't finish high school, or complete a degree, but a couple of years back I handed in the archive of my work as a foreign correspondent to the Australiam War Memorial ... will you judge me because I don't have a piece of paper which proves I am as smart as other 17-year-olds?

You may also be interested to hear I was adjudged as "not having the right stuff" when I tried to join AAPRS as a photographer back in 1991. I next encountered the WO2 who issued this damning career ending assessment when I was a correspondent for The Bulletin with Newsweek in Somalia in 1993. I think my "gatekeeper" is now a handyman in Brisbane.

Meanwhile, I am the editor of the Royal Australian Regiment Association's magazine Duty First - the first to hold the position who never dragged on a boot in the service of the RAR and who does not - and probably never will - have a combat ribbon on his chest on ANZAC Day.

I count Lieutenant Generals and many other fine senior soldiers with far more time up than you among my referees. What they rate is the fact I got the same dust on my boots as many of their soldiers, and I have tried to tell their stories for the past 25 years with some integrity.

I would love to serve my country, but gate keepers are still standing guard, like trolls under a bridge ... why should that denigrate my value and credibility as a journalist?Mick Toalhttp://heatseeker.blog.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3906480814128813107.post-61375901211391785332009-10-14T08:13:09.801+11:002009-10-14T08:13:09.801+11:00Interesting blog Uzi. Australia has a strong legacy of producing quality correspondents at times of conflict, such as Donald Macdonald, Charles Bean, Keith Murdoch and combat cameramen of the likes of Frank Hurley and Niel Davis to name but a few. It's a shame the military closes ranks to the media and akin to what I see the Chinese Government do to other foreign correspondents.Jimba the huthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02094145754558629846noreply@blogger.com
